Programmer Analyst
Programmer Analyst currently working in the healthcare field on a UNIX system with Oracle databases. The position is working on the TennCare MMIS system which is Tennessee's Medicaid program. I’ve written some scripts to automatically compare files that others were manually comparing. The scripts I work with are primarily Kornshell with some Perl and PHP.
I am responsible for all EDI related tasks including testing EDI scripts, pulling test files off SFTP server, attending any meetings dealing with EDI, etc. To organize requests for test files I developed a Sharepoint list and educated users on how to use it. I am also responsible for testing the translation of ANSI X12 files to XML and from XML back to ANSI X12 using the Sybase translator. Scripts to handle the translation also include updates to tables in the database that are required before Sybase will complete successfully.
Being 1 of only 2 people in on the project who knows what an ANSI X12 file is, I've also spent some time educating others on the basic structure, how to read the files, how to find key information in different transaction sets (i.e. Number of Subscribers in an 834 file), etc.

01/2004 – 07/2008
Unum Chattanooga, TN
Programmer Analyst III (2/1/2008 – Present)
Before leaving I was a Programmer Analyst III for Benefits Administration. I worked with my former Client Data Management team providing programming support. I created automated jobs using our in house application, SQL stored procedures and C# objects. I was also responsible for maintaining any existing interfaces by addressing production issues that were identified by the Client Data Management team. For both new and existing interfaces I worked with the EDI Analyst to test all changes. I was also responsible for coordinating with database administrators to move those changes from our development environment to UAT to Production when testing was complete.
The interfaces I worked with are in the ANSI 834 format as well as some proprietary formats. I also provided support to the Client Data Management team for the applications I wrote in my role as EDI Analyst II. About 60% of my time was been spent converting VB6 objects to C#.NET.
EDI Analyst II (1/5/2004 – 1/31/2008)
EDI Analyst II for Client Data Management. I worked with various insurance carriers to implement connections for transmission of electronic eligibility interfaces. Those interfaces were in the ANSI 834 format as well as some proprietary formats. They are for core benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision) as well as voluntary benefits (Life, Supp. Life, STD/LTD, FSA) and others (Payroll, COBRA, EOI, etc). I have also been cross-trained in other areas within our department.
I was responsible for creating and maintaining the specification documents that our IT partners used to code the interfaces. I then worked with the Client Managers to handle the testing of the interfaces with the carriers as well as any technical problems that may arise after moving to production. That testing involves working with raw 834 files to validate the coding against the 834 specifications as well as validating the data itself. It also includes running the file through the Foresight HIPAA validation system and resolving any errors prior to sending the file.
I have written and currently maintain several Visual Basic and C# .NET applications that allow myself and others to provide better service to our clients and be more efficient with our time. Several of those applications read 834 files directly and manipulate the data to check for errors, provide file counts, allow search capabilities, compare multiple files, sort files, etc. Others access our main database. I have won several awards here for some of those applications. My most recent application compared 2 raw 834 files, pulled records missing from one of the files and added them to the other file, updated all the file counts and generated the final file.
I have worked on several team projects. One project was the implementation of a new Mercury Interactive Test Director project designed specifically for the needs of my team. Another project was a review and update of our specification document templates. We were able to make additions to reflect new business needs, remove information that was obsolete. I also designed our new company standard 834 Companion Guide and our test case template. My newest project has been the design, implementation and administration of our team and department’s SharePoint collaboration sites.
I have also been responsible, either wholly or partially, for training every member of my current team including some department specific training for my manager. Being the senior analyst on my team I am constantly involved in projects to improve business processes and in any meetings that affect our department as a whole. I have also been the point person for any questions involving the 834 layout including clarification about specific requirements, what we can or cannot do within HIPAA guidelines and any other questions relating to the 834 layout. The training I’ve provided to my team members and manager included teaching them the 834 layout and all the rules and requirements that they needed to know to perform their jobs.

09/2002 – 12/2003
Medifax EDI, Inc (now an Emdeon Company) Nashville, TN
Project Manager (01/2003-12/2003)
- Worked with new payers (insurance companies) as their primary contact to establish a direct
connection to them rather than having to send through other clearinghouses. This includes
coordinating all communication, setting up their information in our system, establishing a
connection between us for transmission of claims, and all aspects of testing.
- Worked with our developer to map new 837p and 837i files based on the payer’s companion
guide. Also helped convert existing NSF files to 837 layout.
- Worked with raw 837 files during testing and in production to resolve any errors or other
issues with the data in the file. Some testing required me to build test 837 files from scratch
using dummy data. I also ran all test files through the ClarEDI HIPAA compliance validation
system and resolved any errors.
- Manage our connection to WebMD. All issues involving them came to me initially.
- Proactively work through clearinghouse and payer rejection reports.
- Handle problems escalated from technical support that involve payer issues.
- As our team grew (from 2 to 6) I helped train new members on the 837 layout.
- Developed the Project Plan for ERA implementation including Auto Post.
Technical Support (09/2002-01/2003)
- Helped healthcare providers submit their claims electronically. This included helping them
use and troubleshoot our software as well as correcting errors in their claims.
- Walked customers through installing and configuring both of our products and trained them
on how to submit claims. Also monitored them for 2 weeks to ensure a smooth transition.
- Wrote a Visual Basic program to read NSF files and process batch rejection reports.
